How do I get a marriage license in Minnesota?

You can apply for a marriage license in any county in Minnesota, regardless of where you live, work, or intend to get married. You marriage license is good anywhere in the state. Please note: After your ceremony, the signed marriage certificate must be returned to the county where you obtained the license to be filed. 

85 of the 87 counties in Minnesota list their requirements on MOMS – the Minnesota Official Marriage System. The system is convenient and easy to use. Both Washington County and Scott County have decided not to participate. You can contact them directly here and here.

What documents do I need to apply for a Minnesota marriage license?

You will need a valid, government-issued photo I.D. to confirm both age and identity. Once you apply, you should receive email confirmation from the county with a detailed list of what is an acceptable document. You may also need to bring proof of any past annulments or divorces.

Additionally, please note that both parties are required to be present in order for the marriage license to be issued.

How much does a marriage license cost in Minnesota?

As of fall 2025, a marriage license costs $125 in Minnesota. However, you could opt to attend a 12-hour pre-marital counseling program — faith-based or through a secular marriage and family therapist — to receive a discounted rate of $40 to $50 for your marriage license.

How long is a Minnesota marriage license valid?

Once you are granted a marriage license, it will be valid for use in the state of Minnesota for six months.

Is there a waiting period before we can get married after getting a license?

Most counties do not have a waiting period for your license.

What is the minimum age to marry in Minnesota?

The minimum age to get a MN marriage license and marry is 18.

Do we need witnesses for our wedding ceremony?

You need at least two people over the age of 16 to bear witness to your wedding. They will be required to sign your marriage certificate with the officiant.

Can non-residents get married in Minnesota?

Does my name automatically change when I get married in Minnesota?

No. Your legal name does not automatically change when you get married. If you want to change your last name, you must use your completed, certified marriage certificate to update your name with the Social Security Administration, Minnesota DMV, and other institutions like banks, employers, and your passport. You can choose to keep your existing last name, take your spouse’s name, hyphenate, or even create a new name.
